 What is addiction?

People have always used mood altering substances to change the way they feel. History tells us that people got drunk to shut away painful experiences - not just because they liked the drunken feeling. Early last century cocaine and laudenum were used regularly as pick me ups - before the dangers were realised. Also tranqulliser and pain killers have been recognised as addictive. An addiction is to continue to do anything in spite of negative consequences.

Addictions often start as a coping mechanism, a way of running away from pain, difficult circumstances or decisions, or can be the result of a search for true happiness. The user takes a substance in order to cope with the stresses and strains of everyday life, or the absence of joy. But once their body has got used to the substance, they  require more and more top acheive the same effect. They may lead to a breakdown in motivation, loss of work or income, lying and stealing, and even taking away everything you love and care about.

A basic characteristic of addiction is that people who suffer from it do not believe they do - they only become aware of it when they suffer damage, which awakens them to the realisatiion that something has to change.

Over the course of establishing an addiction, users build up a relationship with their substance. It is part of the job of hypnotherapy to put an end to that relationship, establish coping mechanisms, and deal with any pining to continue that relationship to the substance. It also aims to put joy into the life of the user, so that the need to use disappears.

 How does it affect us?

The published figures, in July 09, say that there are 974,000 cocaine users in the UK; 586,000 Ecstacy users; 29,000 heroine users, and 2,546,000 cannabis users. This effects us all.

Obviously, with the breakdown in the users  moral code that can occur, there are responsibilities to others that can involve authority. Matthew would like to make it clear that everything will be dealt with in a confidential manner - your treatment will not be discussed with anyone without your permission.

Using a variety of techniques, alongside   Hypnosis, Matthew can teach you the skills you need to escape from your addictions.   This is also backed up by scientific research. Harefuah, the journal of the Israel Medical Association, noted a 90% success rate with group hypnosis for  overcoming drug addiction,, in 2008.

  The techniques -

These include hypnosis,  NLP -  Neuro Linguistic Programming,  EFT - Emotional Freedom Techniques, TFT - Thought Field Therapy.

NLP involves changing the way you see things, and can be very effective in ending the relationship to a substance

. Both EFT and TFT are meridian therapies. They are based on an ancient Chinese philosophy that there are flows of energy running through the body. These therapies teach tapping sequences, which remove blockages in the flows of energy, making it easy to overcome cravings. This helps with resetting the brain away from addiction. A biobalancing of the brain takes place- and the former user is empowered.

Once you have these techniques you will no longer be a victim of addiction - you will be, once more, in control of your life. This is not about mind control, it is about giving you the control.  Phone 01895 810772.

It would be best for you to refrain from your habit for 24 hours before the therapy, as this will make it far more effective.

Cigarettes - This has a whole section above.

Drugs

Cocaine, Hashish, etc. Matthew has a proven record here -  see the testimonial section - saving the former users thousands of pounds, and helping them gain better health too.

Cocaine use can result in great risk of heart attack or stroke, with all the negative side affects from these, and long term use can damage your liver and your mental health can suffer too - leaving you with anxiety and depression.  It also has a side effect of adding to weight - because users are ravenously hungry after use.

Cocaine can be very deceptive. It may seem that we have a love affair with it, butwhen the affair ends we may need help with withdrawal. The trick is to make the association with cocaine seem even worse than the withdrawal symptoms. See our testimonials section.

There is a definite link between Skunk Cannibis and psychosis - healthy people can become psychotic, through THC - a major componant of skunk.  Grown intensively indoors, it is up to three times as potent as hash or weed.

Cannabis awakens receptors in the brain that produce dopamine levels. But dopamine can increase the chance of a psychotic episode in addition to making people feel good.

Research has shown that the cannaboloid recptors in the brain actually shrink with continued use of cannabis. Therefore the body will need more cannabis to get the same effect as before.  Hypnotherapy can help.

The media reported in January 2012 that discoveries at the University of Monash, in America, had indicated that cannibis use was more predictable in peoople who had been born with a peice at the fornt of their brain missing. The implication is that they will try to create drugs that can substitute for this missing part. But as hypnosis can awaken the 90% of the brain that isn't normally used Effective Hypnosis can do this natuirally.

The stereotypical image, of a down and out who does nothing except feed the habit, is outdated. Many drug and alcohol users are highly functional indivuals who hold down steady jobs. There is the illusion of control.  But  if it causes a problem in your life, and you still continue to do it, despite the negative consequences, then you may need help to change.

If; -  you get high alone; you find your friends are determined by your drug use; you smoke to avoid dealing with your problems; the use causes problems with memory, concentration or motivation; you get anxiety about replenishing your stock - then you may need help.

Speaking to the subconscious part of your mind Matthew can give direct instructions for change. You can put incredible joy into your inner mind, so that you won't need the fix or high.

If your child has become withdrawn, moody and aggressive, it may be that they have been experimenting with drugs.  In July 09,  11, 000 children are being treated, in the  UK, for addictions to alcohol and drugs.Whilst Matthew will be happy to work with them, nothing can be acheived without their co operation.

Alcohol

Over the centuries alcohol  has become established as the country's favourite drug.  It seems culturally acceptable, as it is a regular feature on the most popular TV programmes - and to regularly go out on weekend nights to drink to excess seems to be acceptable to many, particularly the young.  But the majority of anti social behaviour on drinking  nights, and also the majority of hospital admissions, is alcohol related.

Statistics show that 25% of the population indulge in binge drinking. In 2008 there were 4400 deaths from alcoholic liver disease in England. This makes it the fifth highest cause of death.

Drinking  is reported to put 1,500 in hospital everyday - in September 2010. The Daily Mail reports, in April 2011, that one in five women drinks to excess, "self medicating against the stresses and strains of the day". Hypnosis can change this.

Of course, we know that people have drunk not only because they enjoy the sensation, but also because they wish to forget painful experiences. Drinkaware has published a report in  July 2011, stating that the majoity cope with stress through use of alcohol - 73% of women and 76% of men. Matthew can help you to understand the causes and cues that set off the cravings for alcohol, and then give new suggestions for living drink free.

Recent research at two universities has been published in 2011 - the University of Georgia and the University of Bristol -  have looked at alcohol and bad behaviour. Men and women were given alcohol and then shown photos - whilst being asked which emotion was being expressed. Men tended to interpret disgust as anger. Alcohol affected their ability to read emotion, which led to men behaving agressively and a bigger role in criminal behaviour.

Hypnotherapy can help the user to effectively deal with these problems, so that you can either cut down or cut it out altogether.  It is a process of resetting the receptors that provide us with endorphins, making us feel fantastic in every way, so the need for alcohol disappears. Visualisation will be used so that you can build a picture of the person you want to be.

When we are under stress, our serotonin and dopamine levels dip, and alcohol takes them up again, but sometimes too high. Hypnotherapy can help us to do this naturally.. Phone 01895 810772.

Do you binge drink until you fall over?

Have you been violent after drinking?

Have you been treated in hospital as a result of drinking?

Have you been arrested as a result of drinking?

Have you had financial difficulties as a result of drinking?

Hypnotherapy could be the answer.

Gambling

The Daily Mail reports, in Febuary 2012, that more than half of women gamble. This is intended to be a shock statement. An evening spent at bingo may be harmless fun. But if you have a problem with spending more and more money and time on this,  then we can help.

If this has become an obsession, governing  everyday life, then hypnotherapy and TFT can help you to change. We can help with ending your relationship to gambling.  If gambling is a release for stress then we can help you to develop other ways of coping.

 Compulsive shopping

Being a shopaholic can cost a fortune - it doesn't have to be this way. This may be a high priority in the recession, as people may find that they cannot buy what they are used to. See our testimonials section for an example of the power of hypnosis.

If you have lost your job, one of the ways of dealing with the stress may be to give in to this habit, which cannot be sustained on benefits. Hypnotherapy can help you overcome this habit. Phone 01895 810772.

Chocolate

- There is a testimonial in the weight loss section above explaining how Matthew can help you to cut out chocolate in your life, whilst maintaining the feelgood chemicals that come with it..

Sugar , fizzy drinks, etc. Often people will use fizzy drinks to get an energy boost. But this is deceptive, because there is a dip in energy after the boost - making people think that they need another. In this way the addiction can be built up quickly.  Our news section carries details of a case where a lady lost 7 stones in weight, after using hypnosis to overcome an addiction to fizzy drinks.Hypnosis can help.

 Saving money

Matthew has already stated the typical savings for a twenty a day smoker in another section - roughly £2500 a year. But, when it comes to drug use, the savings may be many times that figure. In Feb 09 we worked with a cocaine user who was spending between £100 to £200 on a 'weekend' habit, every weekend.  in September 2011 he worked with a user who was spending £80+ on sessions, three times a week. The former addict's savings may be high, but the health benefits will be enormous too.

If you are booking an appointment for a spouse, please make absolutely sure that they want it. We have had many spouses fail to attend due to lack of commitment,
