About Hypnosis

How can I be helped with Effective Hypnosis?

Most people go into some kind of hypnotic trance everyday - the state of mind that is focused on internal intention whilst banishing external distractions. Examples are seen in the way we respond to television ads, or drive from A to B without realising. Daydreaming is very close to hypnosis - although in it thoughts are random, where in hypnosis suggestions are directed.

Hypnotherapy comes from the union of two Greek words - meaning sleep and healing. But hypnotherapy does not actually encourage sleep. Through encouraging trance it puts someone into the dreamlike state between waking and sleeping, where there is a heightenened receptiveness to understandings and ideas. This bypasses the critical factor of the mind, and in this state one is highly suggestible, and the therapist can then give positive suggestions that help to facilitate the desired outcome. The subconscious mind thinks and responds without prejudgement. It cannot tell the difference between imagination and reality, so will help us to change completely.

Hypnosis changes expectations, decreasing anxiety and stress, which vastly improves the outcome.  Beliefs and expectaions are not only conscious, but they also have physical consequences. In this altered  state of  awareness we have hyper concentration and hyper suggestability. Changes can take place not only on a mental level, but also on a far deeper cellular level, creating physical body change.

Through hypnotherapy a partnership is created between the therapist and the client.  The hypnotic state creates a rapport which can be used to encourage   the subject to therapeutic change. They learn things that are therapeutic - the therapist does not wave a magic wand to 'cure' them. This updates or reprogrammes the mind, dispelling any problems that might arise, defeating negative emotions and helping clients to create the life they want to live. It is therefore the process of communicating with, and educating the subconscious mind for the purpose of making positive changes. Users experience, at some point or other, a paradigm shift - a change in the way they think about life, that results in a change in behaviour.

The subconscious mind houses the amygdala - the part of the mind that guides us away from pain, and towards pleasure. If we can put into the amygdala the thought that our true happiness  depends on our following a certain course of action, then we can easily change.

  Hypnosis in history

History has many examples of the use of hypnosis. Although it was once thought of as a state to be feared, it is actually a natural state.

In the nineteenth century Franz Mesmer entertained the French court with a form of hypnosis.

His work was developed by James Braid, who saw the advantages of suggestion in trance, and coined the term 'hypnosis'.

Dr James Esdaile used hypnosis in operations.

Rachmaninoff is said to have used the services of a hypnotist - Dr. Nicholai Dahl - to help him with the composition of his second concerto.

Milton Erikson was a tremendous influence on modern hypnosis, in the 20th century.  He was non authoritarian and put forward the idea that hypnotherapy was a cooperative arrangement between the therapist and the subject. Through indirect suggestion much can be acheived. He performed many experiments to show that there was no real danger posed by hypnosis, and people wouldn't do anything against their moral code - the only things they could take on would be positive.

Hypnosis with Matthew

Sessions usually last an hour. All sessions are recorded, we ask clients to listen regularly to the CDs, so that the messages are compounded. Ideas are reinforced through repeated learning and the old conditioning will loose it's hold.

Personal transformation

Imagine the improvements to a person's self esteem that can be gained from repeated positive messages. It is not a simple placebo effect.  This is the power of the human brain. It means that mind can influence body and healing. Transformation can be acheived.
