About Hypnosis
Most people glean their information about the power of hypnosis from television or films. Some of the myths put forward in films are entertaining and the entertainer hypnotists can be great fun. But what is effective hypnosis and how can hypnotherapy become effective in people's lives? Most people go into some kind of hypnotic trance everyday - through daydreaming, watching TV adverts, or highway hypnosis - driving from A to B without realising how it was done. Hypnotherapy comes from the union of two Greek words - hypnos, meaning sleep, and therape, meaning change. But hypnotherapy does not actually encourage sleep. Through encouraging trance it puts someone into the dreamlike state between waking and sleeping. In this state one is highly suggestible, and the therapist can then give positive suggestions that help to facilitate the desired outcome. Hypnosis is the technique used by therapists to contact the subconscius mind. Psychologists tell us that most people only use 10% of their brainpower. What this actually means is that the other 90% is subconscious. This means that we can harness a tremendous power for change through hypnosis. In this altered state of awareness we have hyper concentration and hyper suggestability.Through hypnotherapy a partnership is created between the therapist and the client. This updates or reprogrammes the mind, dispelling any problems that might arise, defeating negative emotions and helping clients to create the life they want to live. It is therefore the process of communicating with, and educating the subconscious mind for the purpose of making positive changes. History has many examples of the use of hypnosis. In the nineteenth century Franz Mesmer entertained the French court with a form of hypnosis. His work was developed by James Braid, who saw the advantages of suggestion in trance, and coined the term 'hypnosis'. Dr James Esdaile used hypnosis in operations. Rachmaninoff is said to have used the services of a hypnotist - Dr. Nicholai Dahl - to help him with the composition of his second concerto. Milton Erikson was a tremendous influence on modern hypnosis, in the 20th century. Sessions usually last an hour. All sessions are recorded, and with most of them Matthew will ask clients to listen regularly, so that the messages are compounded.
