Weight Loss

  Weight control in West London.

Why lose weight? In January 08 the government published a document called 'Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives', suggesting that three in five children and the majority of adults will be overweight or obese by 2050. This affects all of us.  The Lancet medical journal said , in Feb 08, that the chances of developing five cancers increases by 50%, if someone is two stone overweight.

Most of us exercise less as we get older, which leads to a rise in cholesterol levels, but whatever your age, you can make lifestyle changes to help with weight control.

The fight - to keep ourselves trim and fit, to make ourselves attactive, to feel good about ourselves, to feel more energetic, to feel more confident  - seems a continous struggle to many. The most obvious answers are, of course, to eat less and exercise more. If this doesn't work then many people will try a diet. Diets can be effective for some, but often fail because they are short term and do not change attitudes towards food.  Crash diets may lead to some initial weight loss, but often are followed by putting it on again.

The reason for this is about how glucose is stored. This is the fuel for the body. If someone who diets deprives themselves of food, the glucose stored in the liver as glycogen supplies the energy.  Glycogen is stored in water, and when it is broken down for energy, water is released aswel. This fluid loss leads to a rapid drop in weight - but when normal eating is resumed, glucose and water stores will be replenished and the body adjusts to its original weight. The key to long term healthy weight control lies in a permanent lifestyle change. When people are motivated to become slim, healthy and attractive, then they can easily control their weight.

Paul Mckenna, the famous hypnotist, is quoted in the Telgraph, in January 08, as saying that weight loss has nothing to do with food, but is all to do with psychology. We disagree - it is a combination of food management, an exercise programme, and change in attitude that leads to successful weight control.

How can hypnosis help?

We can't promise to give you a perfect body, but you can acheive remarkable results through following a regular programme. This should probably be done alongside an exercise programme, which will compliment a change in eating habits.

Through hypnosis we contact the subconscious - that part of the mind that contains 90% of the brain's power. We can help people to think and eat like slim people by reprogramming the subconscious mind. This is not about mind control, because everything is done through agreement with the client. Clients find that they can lose weight, and keep it off long term, because they change their whole relationship with food, both mentally and physically. It doesn't happen overnight, we like to work with people over a period of six weeks. With daily recordings to listen to between sessions, as long as they stick to the programme, we always find that clients lose weight.  Hypnosis will help them to access the motivation to exercise too. There are some contraindications - such as medical conditions that keep weight up, so the results cannot be guaranteed here.

If you smoke to control your weight, and fear that by stopping you will put on more, we can control this through our smoking programme, so that you won't swap one problem for another.

In the news - The Daily Mail, on November 1st, 2005, reports on the warnings of Dr. David Haslam, Clinical Director of the National Obesity Forum. He says that problems from overeating can start in the twenties; cholesterol being formed, body becoming insulin resistant, fertility under threat; in the thirties; rising blood pressure, arteries narrowing, osteoarthritis, sleep problems; in the forties; type 2 diabetes, gallstones, heartburn, depression; from the fifties; severe cardiac problems, high blood pressure, Alzeimer's, cancer, liver failure, reduced life expectancy. It's never too early to start thinking about your eating habits.

In the news - The Daily Telegraph, on April 11th, 2007, reported that this month's edition of American Psycholgist relayed a research study at the University of California on diet plans.  31 diet plans were researched, and between one third and two thirds of dieters weighed more than they had at the outset, four to five years later. The study suggested that yo-yo dieting had been linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and reduced immune system, years later.    Hypnotherapy changes the mindset, and attitudes to food intake, leading to success.
